3rd Annual Innovation Week – March 2-8, 2019

Innovation Week 2019 builds on the success of Innovation Week 2017 and 2018. This upcoming iteration will take place March 2-8, 2019 and will feature a return of the  Innovation Forum-expanded to include a B2B Startup Tradeshow, the comprehensive Transportation Forum, child and youth programming, and a special marquee event in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8. Additional ancillary events, programmed by other groups, also form #IW19: New Westminster Business and Tech Meetup, PechaKucha New West speaker series, and School District No. 40 events.

Background

In 2016, The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development approached the City to host an Innovation Forum. Staff consulted with the Council, the City’s Innovation Sub-Committee, and other New Westminster organizations and individuals to seek recommendations about hosting Innovation Week and programming ideas. Partners identified other events they wanted to host and as a result, the City held the first Innovation Week in 2017. Building on its success, the second Week was offered in late February 2018.

Purpose

Innovation Week provides a central gathering place for leaders and planners in the region to learn, share, network, and collaborate and also offers opportunities for local businesses, children, youth, and residents to learn and participate.

Innovation Week was originally initiated to help create Federal and Provincial Government engagement opportunities in order to increase funding and partnership potential.  It is now also helping to identify other partners necessary to help advance the City’s Strategic Priorities and programs including the City’s Intelligent City initiative, the IDEA Centre (Innovation, Discovery, Education, and Advancement), Master Transportation Plan, New Media Gallery and other city initiatives.

Innovation Week takes place on the traditional and unceded territories of the Qayqayt and Coast Salish Peoples.
